Carolina Leadership Development

Our Programs: Womentoring

Check back in early September to sign up for the 2008-09 Womentoring Program!

Program Information

An official program of Carolina Leadership Development, Womentoring was pioneered in 1992 in response to the lack of female students who considered themselves "leaders" on this campus, despite women’s majority status at UNC-CH. Womentoring, therefore, strives to foster leadership skills and potential in female students on campus through one-to-one or group mentoring and monthly leadership development workshops on topics such as: identifying your strengths, challenging yourself, networking with others, being a mentor, etc.

Program Highlights

  • Monthly Mentor Meetings. Protégées are expected to meet with their Womentors at least once/month. Mentoring matches are based on common interests with the idea in mind that “everyone has something to teach, everyone has something to learn.” Womentors and Protégées will set individual goals for their relationship and time together.
  • 4 Leadership Development Seminars per semester. Topics cover a range from women’s issues to personal development, all with the focus of women’s leadership.
  • Inner Circles, our student-led small group experience, meet at the end of each seminar and plan 2 outside experiences per semester to focus on building a community of women within the program. Each Inner Circle will focus on a different theme, varying according to protégée interest.
  • Special Event Opportunities: Groups of protégées and Womentors will have opportunities to attend Womentoring-sponsored events and conferences several times per semester. Such events are optional components of the program.

Benefits of Participation

Participants in the Womentoring Program will:

  • meet successful members of the University and the community and develop ongoing relationships;
  • receive advice and support in their attempts to become effective students, leaders, and citizens;
  • learn about topics relevant to women and leadership;
  • become aware of ways to become active in the University community.

Time Commitment

Time commitment varies depending upon each Womentoring match. Most importantly, matches are asked to plan at least one mentoring activity a month. This may vary from an office visit, to having coffee, attending a lecture together, etc. Additionally, protégées are expected to attend all leadership development seminars each semester.

Womentoring Listserv

Information on the monthly leadership sessions as well as other events will be circulated via the Womentoring email listserv. This list also enables participants to communicate with one another should anyone wish to initiate a gathering outside of the formal programs. Participants will be subscribed to the listserv upon program kickoff.
