Carolina Leadership Development

Our Programs

CLD offers three formal leadership development programs, in addition to our many individual or one-time opportunities.

NC Fellows RetreatS.A.I.L. (Students Advancing in Leadership), is a unique semester-long experience designed for students who want to explore leadership and personal development through hands-on experiences, peer discussions, as well as speakers and workshops on applied topics in leadership. This experience is designed for the student who is looking for a launching pad opportunity to take their leadership to a deeper level by providing the tools to become a more effective leader elsewhere on campus and in the community. The program is facilitated by undergraduate “Crew” members and highlights include an opening retreat, monthly all-program seminars, as well as regular workshops on various issues and applications of leadership under the umbrellas of ethics, excellence, and engagement. Space in the program is limited in order to maintain the engaging and interactive nature of the experience. Students who complete the requirements of the program will receive a certificate of completion at the end-of-semester SAIL Program commencement.

The North Carolina Fellows Program, conversely, is a four-year leadership development program; the application process for this program is open to all first-year students. Carolina Leadership Development sends a letter to all first-year students during the fall semester inviting them to apply. After an intense and challenging multi-phase interview process, twenty students are selected to participate in the program. Program highlights include the 3-credit Sophomore Seminar, monthly seminars facilitated by campus and community leaders, and annual retreats. Additionally, the program offers limited funding for internships that are arranged by program participants.

The Womentoring Program serves first and second year women by pairing them with female faculty and staff mentors, and by providing leadership development programs and workshops throughout the course of the year. Womentoring was developed to encourage and foster female student leadership efforts at UNC, however, the greatest strength of the program encompasses the development of the relationship between the student and her Womentor. Many pairs choose to maintain contact beyond the scope of the program. Furthermore, many participants have commented that establishing a personal relationship with a faculty or staff member early in their college career assisted them in their adjustment and provided insight into the challenges that are unique to women in a university environment.
