The Carolina Center for Public Service connects the University to the people of North Carolina by helping them use the University's vast resources to improve their daily lives. The Center provides guidance, coordination and support to Carolina's public service activities. It fosters public service through grants and fellowships to students, faculty and staff. And it supports service learning and community-based education. The Carolina Union Activities Board is a group of students who work together through committees to create dynamic and enriching programs for the University. Students serve on committees addressing a wide variety of topics and coordinate programs ranging from film series, concerts, art exhibits, major speakers, and dramatic presentations to special-interest workshops and student talent shows. As volunteers on the Activities Board, students have the opportunity to meet and work with other students, as well as with faculty and staff, develop leadership skills through hands-on program planning, and gain valuable interpersonal skills through democratic committee governance and consensus building. The Carolina Women's Center promotes an equitable and empowering environment through education, support, advocacy and diversity. They offer a variety of leadership and social justice opportunities specific to women. Greek Affairs at UNC-Chapel Hill offers opportunities for both leadership and service through Panhellenic sororities, IFC fraternities, NPHC groups, and specialty groups including the Native American Sorority, the Asian Sorority, and the Coed Fraternity. Check them out. Looking for leadership experience as well as a break in your cost of living? You might consider becoming a Resident Assistant (RA). For more information, contact UNC-Chapel Hill's Department of Housing and Residential Education. The Office of Minority Affairs has several student leadership positions, such as Pre-O Counselors and Minority Student Recruitment Representatives. Their mission is to promote diversity and improve race relations through campus outreach, campus visitation, and community relations. Want to ease the transition for in-coming UNC-Chapel Hill students? The Office of New Student Programs needs students to serve as summer Orientation Leaders and fall Area Coordinators for our Week of Welcome. Orientation Leaders, a paid position, are hired in the fall, trained in the spring, and work throughout the summer orientation sessions. Area Coordinators, also a paid position, are hired in the fall, trained in the spring, and return early in the fall to prepare for Week of Welcome. Both positions provide excellent experiential learning in leadership development. Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History offers lectures, programs, and leadership and volunteer opportunities designed to promote social consciousness and academic excellence. The Center strives to strengthen the involvement of the entire University community -- including all students, faculty and staff, as well as the N.C. community at large -- by providing an exchange in which we can all be proud. Executive? Legislative? Judicial? Find out how to get involved with Student Government. Opportunities include: the Honor Court, the Student Supreme Court, Student Congress, and numerous committees. Check out the over 500 student organizations on campus officially recognized by the University. Keep in mind organizations can be viewed by categorical listing (i.e "Honorary and Service" or "Special Interest") or by their acronym or alternative name (i.e. ASAP or CAA). If one does not exist to suit your needs, consider starting your own organization! The Assistant Director of the Carolina Union for Student Activities will be happy to talk you through it. The University Career Services' online job & internship listings provide information on available non-work study student jobs at UNC-Chapel Hill. Students must register with UCS to be able to access the on-line database.
